Marlboro Academy Installation

Not only does Turf Connections sell certified Zoysia grass, sometimes they find a local cause to donate to as well. Recently, Marlboro Academy in Marlboro County asked Turf Connections for a quote to install turf on their new softball field.  Head softball coach Boyd McLaurin explains, “we had been laying the groundwork to build a field at the school because the girls had to play on a baseball field off-campus which made it difficult to arrange transportation and practice times.  We spent the better part of three years working on sponsorships and fundraisers to make the field a reality.”

Through fundraisers and determination, the softball players, parents and citizens garnered material donations, sponsorships and raised money to install the field, fence, dugout areas and the scoreboard thanks to Marlboro County businesses such as H&H manufacturing, Kersey Fencing, Bail-Out Construction and Sully Blair.   But the team was still faced with the problem of  raising $20,000 for the turf and installation.

“When we heard that the girls were having to raise the money to finish the softball field, it just made sense to donate the turf,” says Turf Connections owners Marc and Melanie Marsh.  “Kids should be out playing and developing the special relationships with teammates and coaches that only sports can provide, not selling raffle tickets, holding bake sales and knocking on doors.”

In addition to donating the turf, Turf Connections also donated time and labor to install the grass.  “We are onsite during a lot of our installations so that we can ensure it is done correctly,” said Marc.

All in all,  four trailer loads encompassing 35,000 square feet were installed over the course of two days.

Melanie explained it was all worthwhile when they saw the players reactions as they saw the field for the first time.  “When they came out of school and saw the field, their faces lit up and they were excited.  Right then, it was obvious that we’d made the right decision.”
